Who we are

We are the Tiuí Collective

A non-governmental organization headquartered in the city of São Paulo, founded in late 2018 and made up of people with experience in technology and in working with social movements and civil society organizations.

We start from an understanding of technology as a fundamental tool for human development and the promotion of social justice. As such, it is inseparable from a popular perspective, with the role of being accessible and responding to the needs of society.

Our challenges arise from the aim of contributing to the promotion of digital care, respect for privacy, and an understanding of the strategic role free software plays in building universal and secure access to digital media. All of this in a context in which our lives are increasingly exposed in the digital environment without our knowledge or consent. During 2020, however, we found that the challenges related to technologies and their uses were even greater.

Tiuí identified the need to be more effective in supporting the social movements and organizations that strive to build a more just society. Actions in the field of technology alone were no longer enough: it was necessary to bring Tiuí’s expertise to other areas as well, placing our team’s knowledge at the service of the demands and needs identified by the movements and civil society organizations themselves.

Tiuí’s challenges thus expanded, mainly towards fostering dialogue and the exchange of knowledge among social organizations mobilized for human, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.

We provide consulting, advisory services, support and training to the civil society organizations we work with. Our focus is, preferably, on groups that mobilize for human, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights, committed to building a more socially just Brazil.

Our work happens through the exchange of knowledge and methodologies, such as the debate on human relations and technology. Our activities include discussions on how the internet works and the current state of surveillance and data collection, analyses and recommendations of collective care practices, and technical and logistical support to national and international social movements and organizations that seek to connect, exchange experiences and act collectively.

Mission

Why we exist

  1. To promote an understanding of human relations and technology, with a view to strengthening social movements and organizations engaged in the defense and promotion of rights.
  2. To contribute, through better knowledge and use of technologies, to the autonomy and greater effectiveness of the actions carried out by social movements and organizations.

What we do

Tiuí currently works in two main areas

01

Training, consulting and research in digital care and technologies

Since its inception, Tiuí has worked closely with grassroots movements and organizations, sharing knowledge in technology and digital care so that these organizations gain autonomy and can improve their actions through better knowledge and use of technologies.

These actions are aimed at grassroots organizations in the fields of digital care, the right to privacy, digital autonomy and the use of software and hardware, focusing on the specific needs of each organization, so that they can continuously strengthen their work for human rights and social justice.

  • Introductory training in digital care: how the internet works and what its vulnerabilities are, the importance of strong passwords, care with social networks and mobile phones, threat modeling, cryptography and free software.
  • Assessments for organizations and popular movements, aimed at offering information security solutions and making their systems less vulnerable. We also encourage discussion about autonomous control of the physical infrastructure where partner organizations’ information is stored and through which it circulates, and in this context we support the training and technical qualification of their members.
  • Research in the field of technologies, popular movements and free software.

02

Partnership with social movements and organizations in Brazil and worldwide

Technical and logistical support to national and international social movements and organizations that seek to connect, exchange experiences and act collectively. Part of our current activities:

Supporting exchanges, networking, events, gatherings and meetings among movements and organizations of the Global South

Given their similarities, civil society organizations and movements have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with one another. Building these spaces allows their members to organize their constituencies, build alliances, advocate with decision makers and amplify their global voice.

Solidarity actions against COVID-19 in Brazil and worldwide

The COVID-19 pandemic had a strong impact on the world’s population, an impact made worse by social inequalities. Poor families in the countries of the Global South were the hardest hit. In response, Tiuí stood in solidarity and sought to support social movements and popular organizations in their efforts to assist the most vulnerable groups.
